22 things I've learnt in 22 years

25 May 2018

I celebrated turning the grand old age of 22 earlier this month.

As I was in Madrid my day consisted of drinking sangria, eating cake for breakfast and screaming the lyrics of Taylor Swift's 22 at the top of my lungs. 22 is going to be my year for sure, nothing but accomplishments and progress already (and I’m mainly referring to the eating cake for breakfast part)

For the first time, I sat and reflected on my past year and what I’ve learned since being 21. This past year has been quite pinnacle for me as I graduated from University, moved into my own apartment in London, bagged a good graduate job and started to pursue more of things I want to do (my blog being one of them).

And then I got thinking, my 22 years of life have taught me a few valuable lessons...

1. Travelling is a form of education.

2. You can't get away with dancing like Beyoncé in a club or any public space.

3. Nothing good will ever come out of comparing yourself to someone else based on their social media.

4. You can’t and shouldn’t rely on other people to create your happiness.

5. Life is not on your time line and you can't put timings on everything. So, you can delete that carefully planned excel sheet.

6. Never tire of helping others.

7. To get a beach body you must; a) have a body b) go to the beach. In all seriousness, exercise because it makes you happy not because you feel forced to. If you stop thinking of exercise as a way to lose weight, you may actually enjoy it.

8. Not everyone who smiles with you is happy for you.

9. Mum was right (about everything...)

10. Question everything.

11. Tell the people in your life how much you appreciate them.

12. Never leave the Nutella you got from the secret Santa at the works Christmas party on the table whilst you go and dance. Someone will steal it.

13. Try, try, try - it's never too late to try, it's never too early to try, you're not too inexperienced to try, you're not to over qualified to try...whatever It is you want to do, just try.

14. Celebrate the little achievements. To quote Drake, 'drinking every night because we drink to my accomplishments'.

15. Be thankful you never made that YouTube channel of you singing.

16. Those late nights studying are worth it.

17. Embrace your embarrassing/awkward moments, even when you double texted that guy (side note: never do this again)

18. Fast fashion is fast for a reason - it disempowers women and traps future generations into poverty.

19. If you really want to remember a moment, don’t take a photo. Our photo obsession is threatening the memories we hold. The exact same applies to possessions - memories over possessions any day.

20. Never look up your illness symptoms on the Internet.

21. Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.

22. Don't let others make you feel like you're inferior.
